Portugal - courses we'll visit in 2025

Lagos, Palmares

The redesigned Palmares golf course features 27 holes of parkland and traditional links was originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.

Each nine-hole course has its own character:

Lagos Course – features the only two lakes of the layout at the short par 3 third and long par 4 sixth. The final holes are played into the expansive dunes on the southwest portion of the layout.

Praia Course – set alongside the seaside dunes with full exposure to all of the elements! The four seaside holes are bracketed by the beach and railway line, with the closing hole rising out of the dunes onto an amphitheatre green below the clubhouse.

Alvor Course – a parkland layout played through narrow fairways lined with mature pine trees. The majority of the holes feature dramatic elevation changes either ascending hillside or descending through valleys.

The Palmares Clubhouse has two restaurants and provides the perfect environment to relax following your round. With the facility located between the Bay of Lagos and the Alvor Estuary it offers stunning views out over the ocean.

Lagos, Boa Vista

Designed by Howard Swan, the Boavista is a challenging course, particularly holes 6 and 8 where golfers have to drive the ball over a ravine. Opened in 2002, the design of the course took into account the natural contours of the terrain and made sublime use of the surrounding landscape, providing views of rare beauty over the Bay of Lagos (east) and Serra de Monchique (north).

With two distinct sections, the course begins with a winding slope in hole 1, par-4, surrounded by sub-tropical vegetation and beautiful and harmonious properties. The first 9 holes take players to the highest point of the resort, where the 9th Tee is a mandatory stop for those who want to enjoy the stunning panoramic views.

Lagos, Espiche

Respect for the traditions of golf and the natural environment were the inspiration behind the layout of the Espiche Golf course and the result has been one that offers a true challenge for golfers of all levels.

Bunkers guard most greens which are large and undulating, demanding a soft hand with the putter. Espiche is a shot-maker’s course where each hole poses a new challenge thanks to the variety of the layout. The par five 1st, dropping some 80 feet from the tee before rising back to the same height at the green, gives golfers an insight into the style of golf at Espiche. The par five 10th is one of the finest in the Algarve and challenges golfers to negotiate the progressively tighter fairway as they approach the green.

Espiche Golf is different, thanks not only to its location within a national park above an ancient aquifer, but also in the underlying ethos that the future of the game lies in making it sustainable for upcoming generations.

Lisbon, Montado

Just 30 minutes from Lisbon, the Montado Golf Resort is located in the “Costa Azul” (“Blue Coast”) region, in Algeruz (Palmela), near Palmela Castle. The resort is surrounded by vineyards that produce the region’s famous wines. Originally an oak grove (which is what the word “montado” means in Portuguese), the golf course has been carefully set into the rural landscape.

The Montado golf course is a par 72 designed by Jorge Santana da Silva and well known for its 18th hole, where the green is located on an island. Quite a challenge at the end of your round!
